We all have a responsibility...What can you do to stop family violence?

We all have a responsibility to stop family violence. Here are some ways you can help.

What can adults do?

  • Learn about family violence.  Talk about family violence in your community.
  • Learn about things that can help people who experience family violence.
  • Learn to build healthy relationships.  Learn to deal with conflict in non-violent ways.  Help prevent family violence.
  • Vote for leaders.  Encourage them to support community programs.  Community programs can help prevent family violence.
  • Volunteer or work with a group in your community.  Participate in Family Violence Awareness Week.
  • Get help if you experience family violence.  Support others to get help if they experience family violence.

What can young people do?

  • Learn about family violence.  Talk about it at school and with your friends.
  • Learn to deal with conflict in non-violent ways.  Help prevent family violence.
  • Get help if you or someone in your family experiences family violence.  Support other young people to get help if they experience family violence.

What can communities and community groups do?

  • Tell people in your community about family violence.  Encourage them to talk about it.
  • Build an interagency group.  Develop and use agreements to work together.
  • Train community caregivers.  Make sure they know the best ways to help people who experience family violence, including emergencies.
  • Help people in your community understand legal tools.  Examples include restraining order, peace bonds and emergency protection orders.  Legal tools can help people who experience family violence get help and be safe.
  • Develop and deliver community programs.  Involve adults, children, youth, and elders.  People need help to heal.  They need support to build healthy families and communities.
  • Keep records from your community programs about family violence.  Share the information with others so we can learn from our experiences and from each other.
